GIS software PGR research: 2. FloraMap

FloraMap is a specialized GIS program which was developed to map the predicted distribution, or areas of possible climatic adaptation, of organisms in the wild. The climate at the locations where individuals of a given taxon were observed is assumed to be representative of the environmental range of the organism. The climate at these locations is extracted from a set of interpolated climate grids, and used as a calibration set to calculate a probability surface. The system can be used for a number of different plant genetic resources applications besides predicting species distributions. Some of these are described, along with future plans for development of the software.
